While some interior designers insist that the entertainment set should be the centerpiece of one’s home, I think that carpets or rugs should be the center of the home’s interior design. Unlike entertainment sets, rugs last longer. In Europe, for example, some carpets date back to the Renaissance or the Crusades wherein carpet making was first introduced to Europe.
The entertainment set or more commonly known as the entertainment showcase symbolizes a thing developed in the latter part of the 20th century that is commonly associated with coldness and lack of family intimacy. The television for one has reduced the intimacy within a family unit as fathers watch the evening news rather than help their sons to perfect their baseball skills and mothers indulge in comedy shows instead of helping their children do their homework.
Area rugs must be the center of the home. They symbolize warmth and coherence rather than dullness associated with other furniture. That is why the common rugs are circular in shape reflecting their position in the house or in the living room. This is consistent with popular belief (Chinese belief) that things that are round or circular attract good fortune and good wealth. Such is the practice likewise associated with what is known as the oriental art of “feng shui”, or fixing a harmonious environment whether at home or in the work place.
The World Wide Web is full of online stores selling cheap rugs made from many countries in Asia and Europe. In this day and age where the traditional family is getting weaker, buying carpets must be a priority of every family rather than buying the latest plasma television from Japan or South Korea. It is a far more better ‘investment’ than a gadget that is likely to keep your family member farther “apart” although living under one roof.
